Manatee Sounds

These recordings are of the sounds made by Florida manatees, and the sounds manatees might hear in their aquatic environments. The recordings were made by the Sirenia Project, USGS (formerly USFWS), at Blue Spring State Park in Volusia County, Florida. Blue Spring is a first magnitude, clear-water spring that courses for about 640 meters before joining the tannin-stained waters of the St. Johns River. Blue Spring was designated a manatee refuge in 1972 and many manatees gather in its warm spring waters each winter. We hope you will enjoy the unique and varied sounds of these manatees and that by listening to them communicate you will have a new appreciation for this endangered species.
